नेपालको सिमाना मिच्ने र दमन गर्ने काम भारतको सबैभन्दा नराम्रो पक्ष-शाहरुखको भनाइ.सक्दो सेयर गरौ

The most contentious debate or pseudo debate (depending on your viewpoint) is the “Is india Tolerant ?” debate

Let us look at some facts
India is a nation with population of 1.2+ billion…. so it is a continent unto itself
Europe has a population of 738 million

There are 29 languages (with more than a million speakers) spoken in india
There are another 31 languages (with between 1,00,000 to 9,99,999 speakers) spoken in india
996 million Hindus call india home
India is home to 172 million muslims (Third largest Muslim population in the world after Indonesia and Pakistan)
28 millions Christians call India home (that is larger the the population of Australia which has a population of 23 million)
Sikhism (21 million), Buddhism (8 million) and Jainism (4.5 million) are the other significant religions practiced across India

In this melting pot called India there is more diversity than any other country in the world.

But in spite of this
Indian democracy has held strong with the exception of a small period in the 1970s when Indira Gandhi wanted to rile as a dictator…
But civilian rule has continued without interruption for 69 years

That also has meant that there have been tremendous challenges that we have had to face
The Emergency (1975–77)
Wars with Pakistan and China
Kashmir Insurgency
Punjab Insurgency
Maoist Movement
Various Riots

The reason that india has remained “Non religious” at administration and constitutional level is because the people of the nation are used to and love to coexist.

I don't know if the tolerance level has changed in us as a people, but Overreaction has become a norm.
The issues have existed since independence… but we as a people have started to overreact as a rule rather than an exception

Intolerance is defined as “an unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behaviour that differ from one's own.”

My opinion

My opinion is that this appears to be on the increase.. and i think it is an appearance and not a fact.

Perfect tolerance does not exist. With tolerance , intolerance is bound to exists.
For example a disciplinarian has tolerance and patience to work hard
But he/she will be intolerant to tardiness or procrastination

So the ideal scenario is
Tolerance towards good
Intolerance towards bad

The problem is that as a people, we are tolerant at a societal level, but at a personal level we are all deeply biased. I do not think over the years this fact has improved much… especially in smaller cities and rural india .

Caste system is well and alive…. and nothing proves it more than Marriage
We are a tolerant society where only 5 percent of marriages are outside caste???
