Back in the chain e-mail era of late 2000s I used to get one of these e-mails very frequently, about how to check whether your changing room has a genuine mirror or not. Well one service reading chain e-mails did to me was making me aware of the fact that changing rooms can have hidden cameras (I was a naive teenager).
Since then I've always checked a changing room before getting on with my business of posing in new clothes like a boss while my mother continually asks me to come out and show her how they look.
Here are the things I do when I first enter the changing room.
1. Hang all the new clothes which I want to try on the provided pegs.
2. Check if the mirrors in the changing room are actual mirrors or two way mirrors by placing my finger on the surface of the mirror and observing the reflection. If there is a small distance between your finger and it's reflection then it's a true mirror, but if the reflection of your finger is touching your finger at the point where your finger meets the mirror and there is no gap to be seen between the reflection of the finger and the finger, it means that it's a two way mirror. Here is a video demonstrating the process. 3. Check (if there are any gaps between the floor and the bottom part of the door) and make sure no one has placed any recording device in that area, this happened to an acquaintance of mine once.4. Look up at the ceiling to make sure that there are no cameras hidden away behind the small slotted vents that maybe present in the ceiling sometimes. Make sure there are no gaps anywhere in the whole changing stall.
Only after thorough checking should you proceed with trying on new clothes. Should you find out that the changing room is under surveillance, quickly contact a law enforcement officer without alerting the store employees lest they remove the camera before the officer arrives.
I hope this helps.Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a gapbetween your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a genuine mirror. However, if your fingernail directly touches the image of your nail, then beware, it is a 2-way mirror! (There may be someone seeing you from the other side). The reason there is a gap on a real mirror, is because the silver is on the back of the mirror UNDER the glass. Whereas with a two-way mirror, the silver is on the surface.
